When does NROTC Orientation start?
NROTC Orientation for scholarship and college program students begins on 18 August 2004. Check-in time will be between 0800 and 1000. The enclosed map shows you where the Navy Building is located on the campus. We recommend that you park as near to the building as possible WITHOUT PARKING IN A metered spot, a reserved spot or a handicapped spot (unless you are handicapped). If possible, pick up a Visitor Parking Pass at the Parking Garage located near the Reily Athletic Center.

NOTE: THERE IS A CHANGE IN THE DATE! IN ORDER TO FACILITATE MOVING INTO THE DORMS, THE NEW START DATE FOR ORIENTATION IS WEDNESDAY, 18 AUGUST! We apologize for any inconvenience this causes for those who made advanced plans. We will not be able to accommodate any students on Tuesday night.

IN LATE SUMMER, YOU WILL RECEIVE ONE ADDITIONAL MAILING WITH ORIENTATION DETAILS. ALSO, BE SURE TO CHECK THE WEBSITE REGULARLY FOR CHANGES!

For which classes am I required to register?
You will need to register for two classes (one Lecture and one Lab):

1. NAVS 101 Lecture
NAVS 101-01 TR 0800-0915
NAVS 101-02 TR 1100-1215

2. NAVS 101 Lab
NAVS 101-41 TR 0700-0750

Classes are listed on the following site: http://www.tulane.edu/~courses/autumnt/F073.html

Advice for general courses of study:

Liberal Arts/Business Majors: The desired number of credits for the first semester should be approximately 14-18 credits. Though Calculus and Physics are required for scholarship students and those desiring to earn a scholarship (with the exception of all Marine Options), DO NOT TAKE CALCULUS AND PHYSICS AT THE SAME TIME unless you think you may want to switch into engineering. Plan to take Calculus in the freshman year and Physics in the sophomore year. A typical first semester would be:

Calculus I
Naval Science
English 101
General Studies (History, Political Science, Psychology, etc.)
Language

Engineering Majors: The required number of credits for the first semester will be approximately 18-21 credits. You can expect to have a heavy course load such as this for six out of the eight semesters at Tulane University. A typical first semester would be:

Calculus I
Physics I and lab
Chem I and lab
Naval Science and lab
English 101 or Computer Science 101
Engineering Tides

If I am at a cross-town school (Loyola, UNO, Xavier, Dillard), will these courses cost me any extra money?
No, you can find these courses in your own university course catalog. Register for them with your university and we will receive notice that you are registered.

Do I really need my original Birth Certificate?
Yes and no. We need to verify your citizenship by reviewing a certified (original or certified copy) birth certificate. This is a birth certificate with a raised seal of some sort. If you only have a photocopy of your BC, this is not acceptable. We recommend you write/call the City Hall at your place of birth to obtain an official copy with a raised seal. Once we have received and confirmed the raised seal on your birth certificate, we will hold it until orientation and then return it to you. If you would like it returned immediately, please enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope with your packet.

Additionally, those with official forms of ID that require a certified birth certificate (such as a Driver's License or Military ID) will not be exempt from this procedure. ALL incoming freshman must have their Birth Certificate reviewed.

When will I move into the dorms?
Students will be allowed to move into the Tulane dorm rooms on the first day of orientation. Move-in will occur between 1200-1400 on August 18th. Students affiliated with our cross-town schools (Loyola, UNO, Xavier, Dillard) will need to make special arrangements with their respective housing offices. If you are having difficulty with this process, please call the Freshman Advisor.

Should I arrive the day before orientation?
Because we recommend that you check-in at the earliest time possible (0800) on August 18th it is best to arrive ahead of time. You will be allowed some time after check-in for personal business, however, once orientation begins (1400 on Wednesday), you will not have time for personal business or meeting with family members until Saturday's picnic.

How long should my parents stay?
After check-in on August 18th there will be a swearing in ceremony and reception, which will allow parents time to meet the Unit Staff members. Additionally, a question and answer session has been scheduled to follow. After the ceremony and dorm room check-in, you will not be allowed to see your son/daughter until the picnic on Saturday, August 21st. We highly encourage you to attend the picnic celebration if your plans can accommodate it. Parking will be difficult on Saturday, as it is campus move-in day. No parking will be allowed on McAlister Drive. We recommend that you park on St. Charles Avenue and walk through campus to the Navy building.

Will the university hold any boxes/mail that I send to myself?
If you are constrained by airline requirements and cannot pack everything you need for college, we recommend a few options. There are the typical general needs stores available here in New Orleans (Target, Wal-Mart, K-Mart). You could purchase needed items upon your arrival. You can also ship a maximum of two boxes to the NROTC unit. We will hold these items here in the building. They must be moved out of the building between 1200-1400 on August 18th. We will not hold them after that time. The address:

YOUR NAME

New Orleans, LA 70118-5698

Scholarship Students:
Do I need to pay the $300 deposit that Tulane requires?
Yes, pay the deposit to ensure you have a spot at the school. This deposit will be credited to you in late fall (Oct.-Nov.).

Do I live with other ROTC students?
No, you will follow the room assignment process just like all other new incoming students. So go ahead and look at all of the material that Tulane provides for you and make your decision from there. If you do have rooming questions, please address them to the university.

I’m getting a tuition bill, should I pay it?
NO, NO, NO! You will get several bills in the mail that indicate you must pay by a certain deadline. Ignore these bills. Your tuition, room, board and fees will be paid for by the Navy in mid-September. Your bill will then reflect this. The only fee that you should be concerned with is the health insurance fee (~$1,500). You must sign a card that indicates that you do not need/want health insurance and this fee will be removed from your bill (i.e. you are still covered under your parents’ insurance). If you need this insurance, you must pay for it.

How much money will I need to start off the school year?
First, you will need to bring a check/cash for the cost of NROTC Orientation. The cost is not yet determined, but will be approximately $150. This will primarily cover your meals for the extra time you will be at school, but does include some additional expenses.

Second, while scholarship students are authorized a $350 book stipend, the stipend will not arrive until 4-6 weeks into the school year. Additionally, $350 does not always cover the entire amount you might spend on books. Therefore, you need to be prepared pay for your books on your own, in anticipation of reimbursement.

Third, just as the book stipend does not "kick in" right away, it will take about a month before scholarship student’s monthly, non-taxable, $250 subsistence allowance arrives in your bank account. So any need for basic items up to that point must be planned for.

Do I need a bank account?
Good Question! You will absolutely need to have a bank account in order to get your midshipman stipend. You can do several things—open an account at your parents’ bank or open an account at a New Orleans bank. The banks near campus are Whitney and Hibernia Bank. You could also go for a bank that is national and/or doesn't have specific location. For example, USAA, if either of your parents are/were in the military service, you could use this bank.

You will need to check with the banks themselves in order to find out the procedure for opening an account from a distance. With internet banking and the internet in general, it is likely you could do a majority of an application online and simply send in a check for the initial deposit. You will need to get the banks routing number so that you can fill in the DDS (Direct Deposit) form that is part of the packet.

What meal plan should I choose?
The meal plan included with Tulane’s waiver (for scholarship students) of room and board is Carte Blanche Plus 100. You can read more about this meal plan at http://www.campusdining.tulane.edu.

When will I get reimbursed for my travel to school and how does that work?
Reimbursement will occur within 4-6 weeks of your arrival. For those who drove, your approximate mileage will be needed to complete the paper work. For those flying, a receipt and itinerary for your flight will be required in order to complete the paperwork.
